Founder of Roots Television, Dumebi Kachikwu, has clinched the presidential ticket of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in a primary held on Wednesday.

He defeated Kingsley Moghalu, former presidential candidate of the Young Progressives Party (YPP), and Chukwuka Monye to win the ADC ticket in the primary election held in Abeokuta, Ogun state capital.

According to the electoral committee chairman, General Ekundayo Opaleye, Mr Kachikwu polled 977 votes and was declared the winner, while Mr Moghalu, who came second got 589 votes.

Mr Monye came third with 339 votes.

Mr Moghalu in a speech before the commencement of voting had said he would defeat Bola Tinubu and Atiku Abubakar, presidential candidates of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 election if given the ADC ticket.

“I am here to offer myself to you not because I am better than anybody here but because I care about the future of our country. I offer myself because God has given me the main recognition to stand side-by-side with Atiku, and Tinubu and to send them into retirement,” he had said.

The former United Nations diplomat announced his decision to join ADC in October 2021.

Mr Kachikwu in his acceptance speech promised purposeful leadership to rescue the country from the current challenges facing it.
