Lucky Irabo, chief of defence staff (CDS), has warned the governors of Ondo and Benue states that no state has the authority to procure automatic weapons for state security outfits.

The CDS said this on Friday in Abuja after the national security council meeting which was presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari.

Last month, governor Akerdolu of Ondo consistently advocated for the need to allow the South Western Security Network code-named ‘Amotekun’ to carry Ak-47 in order to protect the citizens against bandits and other security threats in the region.

Also in August, governor Ortom of Benue had said the personnel of the state’s security outfit would carry ‘sophisticated weapons’ to deal with insecurity in the state.

Speaking on the development, Irabor said the licence for the procurement of automatic weapons — such as AK-47 — lies with the agencies of the federal government.

“Firearms fall into two major categories. You have the automatic weapons and the ones that we may classify as non-automatic weapons, which some of you may even have if you have the appropriate licences — talking about the pump action which is the very common one, and sometimes even the dane guns some of the hunters use,” he said.

“What is involved in the class mentioned has to do with automatic weapons. There’s no state that has been given a licence for that.

“So, you do not ask for what you do not have the power to acquire.”
