The Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Abdulrasheed Bawa has said Willie Obiano, the former governor of Anambra State is yet to meet his bail conditions set by the anti-graft agency.

Mr Bawa disclosed this on Monday in a chat with journalists during the fifth annual general assembly of the Network of National Anti-corruption institutions in West Africa (NACIWA) region in Abuja, TheCable reported.

“He (referring to Obiano) has been granted bail. We are waiting for him to fulfil his bail conditions. He has been cooperating with us and everything is going on well,” the EFCC chairman said.

Mr Obiano was arrested hours after he handed over power to his successor, Chukuwuma Soludo on Thursday.

The former governor was arrested at the international wing of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos while trying to travel out of the country.

He was taken into custody and later transferred from the EFCC custody in Lagos to Abuja.

Last year, the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Anambra has petitioned the EFCC asking for the probe the finances of the state in order to unearth “monumental deception”.

Speaking on the details of the arrest, Mr Bawa said the arrest of Mr Obiano is not “political”, saying the commission is only carrying out its mandate, which involves investigation of financial crimes.

The EFCC boss declined to comment on when the former Anambra governor will be charged to court and the bail conditions stipulated by the EFCC.

“There is nothing political about it. We are a penal institution. You know what the EFCC stands for. We investigate crimes, we look at people who have committed the crimes, we link it up together and of course we go to court. That is what we have been doing. That is all we will continue to do,” he added.
